The straight talk

Charleston's LGBTQ+ community has real institutional depth — the Alliance for Full Acceptance has been doing advocacy work here since 1998, and We Are Family opened the area's first dedicated LGBTQ+ center in 2025 — but that's community strength, not legal protection. South Carolina has no statewide nondiscrimination law, and the city's own ordinance covers housing and public accommodations but stops short of private employment. It's a genuinely walkable historic downtown wrapped in a much more car-dependent metro, with hurricane and flood exposure about as high as it gets in the Southeast.
